A widow is taking her husband’s ex-employers to Court after he died from an illness relating to asbestos exposure.

Wendy Brazier is taking delivery driver, Harry Brazier’s former employers to the High Court in London in a bid to force them to claim responsibility for his death. Mr Brazier died in April 2004, aged 64.

An Inquest said he died from mesothelioma – a condition developed through exposure to asbestos. Mrs Brazier, 63, of Sywell, said

“I miss him dearly. I am fighting for Harry really. I think once it’s over and done with there will be closure. Obviously I will never forget Harry, we’d got that wonderful togetherness”.

The only time Mr Brazier allegedly came into contact with the substance was in the 1960’s when he loaded asbestos sheets for enamellers Stewart and Gray, which was based in Tooting before it relocated to Wellingborough.

He developed mesothelioma, a condition which takes up to 40 years to show itself in people who have been exposed to asbestos, in 2002. Mrs Brazier, who has spent £2,000 of her retirement money pursuing the case, said:

“It takes years for the symptoms to start to show. Before he got ill, Harry was fine. He just had a cough which wouldn’t go away and the doctors found all this fluid on his lungs”.

The part of the business which moved from London is now called Escol Products and is based in Huntingdon.

A representative from Escol Products refused to make comment about the matter. An Inquest was held in Kettering in 2004 and a High Court date has been set for July 17th.

Mrs Brazier’s Solicitor, Dominic Collingwood, wants to hear from people who worked for Stewart and Gray between 1961 and 1963. He can be contacted on 0845 241 5566.
