Pleural Thickening
Pleural thickening is one of the most common claims we receive. Fortunately the condition does not affect life expectancy but it can cause substantial
disability.
Pleual thickening restricts the lungs' ability to expand and contract, and therefore makes breathing more difficult.
Like plaques, thickening is evidence of exposure to asbestos and it places people at higher risk of developing other more serious chest diseases . The pleura is the lining of the lung.
Fibrosis of the pleura can create a thickening of the lining which, if extensive, may cause breathlessness during activity, and chest expansion will also be reduced.
Investigation is by x-ray and lung function. Pleural thickening is a diffuse fibrosis in the pleura. Asbestos fibers that move from the lung to the pleura cause the pleura to thicken and a widespread fibrosis can develop.
