Corries' specialist Cycling Injury Team is led by director
- and keen cyclist - Mark Dawson.
In spite of the introduction of measures including cycle
tracks, cycle lanes and advanced stop lines, cyclists remain
extremely vulnerable road users and cycling accident claims
are regrettably, a frequent occurrence.
In increasingly congested, multi-lane roads, cyclists'
visibility remains a significant difficulty. The statistics
speak for themselves: in 2003, 114 cyclists were killed
with total casualties being 17,033. About a quarter of cyclists
killed and a third of those injured are children with 16-year-olds
being most at risk.
We have extensive experience in cycling accident claims,
helping cyclists obtain compensation for their injuries
following an accident, whether they were travelling to or
from work, or simply enjoying a leisurely ride.
Most accidents happen in daylight with rush hours being
the most dangerous. Spring and summer - when more people
are outdoors - account for most of the accidents.
The most common cycling accident claim involves a motorist
turning across the path of a cyclist, or striking a cyclist
from behind.
Many of our cycling accident claims revolve around leg
or arm injuries, which actually account for more than half
of cyclist casualties. Injuries to the chest or abdomen
are far less frequent but, when they do happen, they may
involve head injuries too.
The head is most likely to hit the ground or a hard surface
before other parts of the body. More than 50 per cent of
cyclists who are injured sustain head injuries and about
70 per cent of fatal accidents are caused by serious head
injuries. Wearing a cycle helmet is always advised.
Many cyclists often find it difficult to bring a cycling
accident claim against those responsible for their injuries
whether it is another road user or a local authority.
Through our personal cycling experiences - and with many
years of legal expertise - our cycling accident claims team
can assist with even the most complex claims.
