I don't know where I was exposed to asbestos, does it matter?
Mesothelioma can take decades to appear. It is not surprising that many people cannot remember where they were exposed to asbestos. Under the DMPS we may be able to help you establish where asbestos exposure occurred. Then we can advise you if you can claim under the scheme.
The average payout for successful Mesothelioma Scheme claims is over £153,000. the scheme has improved and now purports to pay 100% although the payments do deduct all benefits payments made and there is a ring-fenced sum of £7000 for your Solicitor fees.
Pleural Plaques
A scheme set up by the Ministry of Justice in 2010 paid £5,000 to those with pleural plaques who had lodged claims before a change in the law in 2006 meant they could no longer get the compensation that many others before had achieved.
We are aware that some people who get the £5000 award think that they cannot get any more compensation. That is wrong. We can explain this to you and help you understand your options.
Pleural plaques are scarring or marking on the lining of the lung (the pleura). They are a known marker of exposure to asbestos.
Pleural plaques can develop into mesothelioma. In our experience, some people don't know they can make a further claim if they get mesothelioma after having had pleural plaques.
Lung Cancer
About 40,00 people per year are diagnosed with lung cancer in the UK. We understand that about 10% of these may have this diagnosis due to asbestos exposure. We know that lung cancer is often diagnosed and the sufferer is not told it may be due to asbestos.
